Emma Kranendonk and
Brandi Nelson were double winners
on senior day, and NAIA No. 9 Xavier University of Louisiana rolled to an
8-1 women's tennis victory Saturday against 11th-ranked LSU-Alexandria.
The Gold Nuggets (7-13) snapped a six-dual losing streak and earned their fifth
victory of the season against a ranked team. The Generals (15-3) dropped their second straight.
Kranendonk and
Charlene Goreau defeated the ITA's 12th-ranked NAIA doubles team, Sara Andrade
and Gisela Amor, 8-1. Kranendonk beat Laia Charles 6-2, 7-6 (7-3) on the third singles court.
Nelson and
Lacee Ancar beat Charles and Paula Gordillo 8-6 to complete a sweep of the
doubles matches, then Nelson rallied to defeat Amor 4-6, 6-2, 1-0 (10-4) on the second singles court.
Another winning XULA senior was
Sha'Nel Bruins, who defeated Betsa Vasquez 6-3, 6-4. Bruins, Kranendonk,
Nelson and
Dasia Harris were honored in a prematch ceremony.
Goreau beat 33rd-ranked Sara Andrade 6-1, 6-0 on the first singles court. Freshman
Yi Chen Pao
rallied from a 5-0 deficit to beat Gordillo 7-5, 6-2 and clinch the dual. Pao also won twice; she
and
Lyndsey Clark defeated Maria Emilia Montenegro and Vasquez 8-3.
"The Nuggets played one of their best matches of the season, and it couldn't have come at a better time,"
XULA coach
Alan Green said. "A couple of courts we had to come from behind, but I was pleased with the
way we finished. Even with the recent losses, I feel pretty good about how we are playing."
XULA and LSUA split their season series. The Generals won 5-4 at home April 1.
