BATON ROUGE, La. — Xavier University of Louisiana
got victories from the doubles team of
Lyndsey Clark and
Yi Chen Pao and
Charlene Goreau in singles Wednesday in a 6-1 women's tennis loss
to Southern University.
The Lady Jaguars (10-8) extended their win streak to
five and evened their all-time series with the Gold Nuggets (6-8) at three
victories apiece. Southern beat XULA for the second consecutive year.
Clark and Pao, both freshmen, cruised past
Mia Kent and D'Jeri Raymond 6-1 on the third doubles court. But
Southern picked up the doubles point by winning the other two courts,
including Darnesha Moore and Rufaro Chirewa's 7-5 decision over
Goreau and
Brandi Nelson. Moore and Chirewa rallied from a 5-2
deficit and snapped Goreau and Nelson's 5-match win streak.
Southern clinched the dual and took a 4-0 lead when Moore defeated
Emma Kranendonk 6-3, 6-2 at No. 2 singles, but the teams completed the final three matches.
Goreau beat Stephanie Mbaya 6-3, 6-3 on the first court.
Pao and
Sha'Nel Bruins split sets in their matches, with Bruins losing
in a super-tiebreaker, and Pao losing in a tiebreaker.
For XULA, ranked ninth in the NAIA, it was the second of four consecutive duals in nine days against NCAA
Division I opponents. The Gold Nuggets, who beat Grambling this past weekend, will visit
Jackson State at noon Saturday and 48th-ranked Tulane at 3 p.m. Sunday at City Park/Pepsi Tennis Center.
The second-ranked XULA men also will visit Jackson State Saturday.
