ATLANTA - When the dust cleared on the second day of the HBCU National Championships at the South Fulton Tennis Center on Friday, a pair of XULA women had earned their way into the semifinals of a tournament typically dominated by NCAA Division I student-athletes. 

Sophomore Maja Brnic earned her way into the semifinals of the top women's competition, the Flight A singles bracket, with a straight-sets win over 4-seed Toffee Ghorab of Hampton, 6-2, 6-1, in the quarterfinals. 

Saturday was a much lighter day for Brnic, who played four times on Thursday. She will face top-seeded Regina Urbiola Armenta of Norfolk State Saturday at 12:30 p.m. CST with a trip to the HBCU finals on the line. 

In the Flight B singles ranks, junior Asadah Ma'at reached the quarterfinals with a 6-1, 6-0 showing against No. 8 seed Melissa Nanjala Mwakha of Alabama A&M. She then defeated Cleanne Pickel of Alabama State 6-1, 7-6(2) Friday evening. 

Ma'at will play Polina Georgieva of Jackson State at 12:30 p.m. CST Saturday. 

Four other XULA women played on Friday. Sophomore Anais Yakan, also playing in Flight B, reached the quarterfinals after beating No. 3 seed Sabina Iurea of Norfolk State, 2-6, 6-4, 11-9, before losing 6-1, 6-3 to Nardine Salem of Alabama A&M Friday evening. 

Junior Sanai LeSure had a similar showing in the Flight C bracket, defeating Johari Gorham, the 6 seed representing Florida A&M, 6-3, 6-1. She lost 6-2, 6-1 to 4-seed Rim Assanhaji of Alabama State Friday evening. 

Rounding out the Flight C results for XULA, sophomore Makai Sales lost in the Round of 16 to 8-seeded Tiara Belen Alvarez of Jackson State, 6-2, 6-4, while fellow sophomore Mia Edwards fell 6-2, 6-1 to Naomi Blanks, the 7 seed representing Alabama A&M.
