Price survives pileup to lead Gold Nuggets at NAIA national meet

     VANCOUVER, Wash. — An early collision and injury set back Xavier University of Louisiana's Taylor Price Friday at the NAIA National Women's Cross Country Championships, and the Gold Nuggets finished 37th in the team standings.
     Price, a senior and a three-time Gulf Coast Athletic Conference individual champion, ran 5,000 meters in 23 minutes, 41.6 seconds. She placed 330th out of 341 runners.
     "Taylor got hurt a few seconds into the race, but she managed to finish," XULA head coach Yhann Plummer said. "A group of girls fell, and Taylor was in the mix. She got stepped on in the pileup. She twisted her ankle in that mishap and could not compete at her best.
     "Before the injury, I expected Taylor to finish in the top 60."
     Another senior, Maliya Vaughan, was XULA's No. 2 finisher and 337th overall in 23;47.4. Also finishing for XULA were Alexis Williams (337th in 25:26.9), Ky'Reon McBride (338th in 26:21.7), Darryan Horton (339th in 26:28.3) and Hajjia Mohammed (340th in 28:54.2).
     The XULA women scored 1,250 points. Madonna, the 2018 runner-up, scored 111 points to win the team title by 36 points over College of Idaho and 52 points over SCAD Atlanta. Huntington junior Hannah Stoffel was individual champion in 17:18.4 and won by nearly 17 seconds.
     This was the Gold Nuggets' 13th appearance at NAIA nationals. Ten of those appearances were the result of automatic team qualification in conference or regional meets.
     Price was honored Thursday as XULA's NAIA Champions of Character recipient.
     Plummer's Gold Nuggets will resume competition in January during the indoor track and field season. It will be the first time since 2004 that the XULA women compete indoors.
