Xavier University of Louisiana tennis won all three of its dual matches Thursday
on the opening day of the multisite LSUA Invitational in central Louisiana.
The Gold Nuggets (5-1), ranked third in the NAIA, scored 7-0 victories
against Texas A&M-Texarkana and Louisiana College. The Gold Rush (4-1), ranked second, defeated Texas A&M-Texarkana 7-0.
The Louisiana College match was played in Pineville, and the other two matches were played in Alexandria.
Against Louisiana College,
Yi Chen Pao produced the second golden set of
her XULA career when she won all 24 points in her first singles set against McKenna Raines.
The Gold Nuggets'
Angela Charles-Alfred won her four matches without dropping a game.
She played doubles with
Lailaa Bashir, and they are the No. 1 team this season among small colleges.
Santiago Perez and
Shaikh Abdullah clinched the doubles point for the Gold Rush,
then Perez clinched the dual with his 6-0, 7-6 (7-2) victory against Alejandro Oviedo at No. 1 singles.
The TAMUT men provided XULA's stiffest competition of the day; the Eagles won
a collective 43 games despite winning only one set.
"Texas A&M-Texarkana's men have played us tough all three times we've met,"
XULA head coach
Alan Green said of the seventh-year program, which was among "others receiving votes"
in this week's NAIA coaches poll. "They fight until the end."
Friday will be the Gold Rush's turn to play twice: 9 a.m. against Texas Wesleyan
and 3 p.m. at Louisiana College. The Nuggets will play Texas Wesleyan at noon. The seven-school tournament will conclude Saturday.
