NEW ORLEANS — Xavier University of Louisiana's
national-champion doubles team of
Angela Charles-Alfred and
Lailaa Bashir
has been honored as All-Louisiana for the 2019-20 women's tennis season.
Bashir was voted Freshman of the Year.
A Louisiana Sports Writers Association panel of
college tennis publicists selected the All-Louisiana team and the major awards.
Recipients were announced Saturday.
Charles-Alfred, a junior from Saint-Pierre, Martinique, was
chosen to the first team. Charles-Alfred was 40-5 over
two semesters — 15-3 in singles and 25-2 in doubles — and combined
with Bashir to win four doubles tournaments during the fall, including XULA's
first-ever ITA Cup Small-College title.
The All-Louisiana honor is Charles-Alfred's first.
She is the seventh XULA woman to make the first team.
Bashir, from Jackson, Miss., and a graduate of Jackson Academy,
was 46-4 for the season — 21-2 in singles and 25-2 in doubles —
and was unbeaten during the spring semester, winning 10 decisions apiece in singles and doubles.
Bashir is the Gold Nuggets' second athlete to win
an LSWA major award and the first since Anastesia Opata was Newcomer of the Year in 2008.
XULA finished the COVID-19-shortened spring season
10-1 in dual matches and ranked third in the NAIA.
