        MOBILE, Ala. — 
Angela Charles-Alfred scored the only point for Xavier University of Louisiana — a three-set victory at No. 1 singles — in a 6-1 loss Sunday to South Alabama.
        It was the first dual match of the season for both teams.
        Charles-Alfred rallied to defeat Nikola Kohoutova 1-6, 6-2, 7-5 and give its XULA its second victory in three years against South Alabama at No. 1 singles.
        All nine matches were completed after a one-hour rain delay. Milka Pasanen and Yu Fujioka clinched the doubles point on the second court with a 6-4 victory against 
Farah Baklouti and 
Kyra Akinnibi. Pasanen clinched the dual on the sixth singles court with a 6-0, 6-2 victory against 
Angelica De Vincenzis.
        "Not a good start today for the Nuggets," 18th-year head coach 
Alan Green said. "We played hard, but we have some work to do. We will get better and learn from today."
        The loss was the just the ninth in the last 54 dual matches for the XULA women dating to Feb. 23, 2018. XULA's only loss in a 10-1 season a year ago was 6-1 at South Alabama.
        It was the first of four duals for the XULA women this season against NCAA Division I opponents. XULA is ranked third in the NAIA.
        Next for XULA will be a noon dual Saturday at home against city rival Loyola, which is ranked 15th in the NAIA. XULA's second-ranked men will make their 2021 debut at the same time against the Wolf Pack.
