ROME, Ga. — Xavier University of Louisiana's
Juan Ramirez and
Jacobi Bain defeated Georgia Gwinnett's second-seeded Daniel Czepielewski and Federico Bonacia 6-2, 4-6, 1-0 (10-2) Friday in the men's doubles main-draw quarterfinals of the ITA Cup tennis championships.
Ramirez, a senior, and Bain, a freshman, are 8-1 as a team this season. They advanced to a 2:30 p.m. EDT Saturday semifinal in the NAIA bracket against San Diego Christian's third-seeded Nick Nienhaus and Chris Papa, a 6-2, 6-3 winner against Josh Turnquest and Jeremias Rocco of Indiana Wesleyan.
"We got off to a slow start because we were playing the name instead of the ball," said XULA Coach
Alan Green, referring to Georgia Gwinnett's current streaks of seven NAIA national team championships and 147 dual-match victories. "The second set we started putting a lot more balls in the court, and it began to put pressure on Gwinnett. It was a tough match, but we came out on top this time. We'll have to play well tomorrow, too, against another seeded opponent."
XULA's only women's entry in the consolation bracket, Aisha Niyonkuru, lost 6-2, 6-1 in singles to Montreat's Valerie Quiceno Ibarguen. Niyonkuru will play Renee Acena of Saint Mary (Neb.) in the next round at 10:30 a.m. EDT Saturday.
