Skylah Barton,
LeilaniCyan Johnson-Gordon and
Bria Gaines qualified for NAIA nationals
and led Xavier University of Louisiana's women to a second-place team finish Friday at
the Red River Athletic Conference Cross Country Championships at Windcrest Golf Course.
Barton was the Gold Nuggets' first finisher
for the fourth time in as many meets this season. She ran 5,000 meters in 21 minutes,
2.8 seconds and placed seventh out of 25 runners. Johnson-Gordon finished eighth in 21:20.7,
and Gaines was 10th in 22:21.9.
The top-10 finishes advanced
those three to NAIA nationals Nov. 19 at Vancouver, Wash. In addition, the top-10 finishes
earned Barton, Johnson-Gordon and Gaines All-RRAC honors.
XULA — a longtime Gulf Coast Athletic Conference
member that won that league's last 14 women's team titles — placed second
to Our Lady of the Lake. OLLU scored 18 points, and the Gold Nuggets scored 55.
The team finish was higher than XULA's third place in 2015, when cross country competed in the
RRAC as an affiliate member.
XULA's other finishers were
Jalyn Jenkins (13th, 23:13.7)
and
Darryan Horton (18th, 26:02.8). Jenkins, the 2020 GCAC individual champion, competed for the first time since May surgery.
OLLU junior Nadia Sifuentes was the individual champion
in 18:50.4. Sifuentes won by more than a minute over the runner-up, teammate Jasmine Hernandez (20:08.6).
