ALEXANDRIA, La. —
In a matchup of top-10 NAIA women's tennis teams Sunday, No. 3 Xavier University of
Louisiana won 6-1 at No. 8 LSU-Alexandria.
Lailaa Bashir,
Angela Charles-Alfred,
Kyra Akinnibi and
Farah Baklouti
won in doubles and singles for XULA (4-2). Akinnibi clinched with her 6-4, 6-4 victory against Alicia Romero Gomez on the
third singles court. Akinnibi and
Farah Baklouti clinched the doubles point with their 6-3 victory against Romero Gomez and Niamh Packer.
Bashir, an All-America sophomore playing her first match on the first
singles court, won 6-2, 6-4 against Darija Mladenovic.
The victory was XULA's third this season
against a ranked NAIA opponent. XULA won 7-0 at home Feb. 8 against city rival and No. 15 Loyola,
then won 4-3 at Canton, Ga., Feb. 19 against No. 14 Montreat.
This was LSUA's opener after a pair of
exhibition losses to NCAA Division I opponents.
