NEW ORLEANS — Xavier University of Louisiana women's tennis,
difficult to beat on its campus in recent years, opened its home schedule Monday with a 7-0
victory against city rival Loyola.
XULA (1-1) has won eight straight and 18 of its last 19
home duals. XULA won its last 13 at home against NAIA top-25 opponents; XULA is ranked third, and Loyola is 15th.
It was XULA's first competition in the Southern States Athletic Conference
— the school's first regular-season league match since 2010.
Lindsey Dixon clinched at No. 6 singles for XULA (1-1),
and
Angela Charles-Alfred,
Lailaa Bashir,
Kyra Akinnibi and
Farah Baklouti won in singles and doubles.
Dixon, a sophomore, clinched for the first time at XULA
by defeating Mathilde Camus 6-2, 6-3.
Charles-Alfred beat eighth-ranked Lucy Carpenter 6-4, 7-5
on the first singles court. Charles-Alfred, No. 10 in the ITA NAIA end-of-season rankings of 2019-20,
is unranked because she did not compete in singles during the fall 2020 semester.
Bashir, ranked second,
defeated Fatima Vasquez for the second consecutive year, this time 6-4, 6-1.
Fifth-ranked Akinnibi beat Ariana Salqueiro-Estela 6-2, 6-4.
Baklouti, a winner in three sets last season against Madelynn Chavez, was the first singles player to
finish this time because of her 6-2, 6-2 victory against Chavez.
Angelica De Vincenzis beat Manuela Alban 6-4, 6-2.
Charles-Alfred and Bashir, the No. 1 team
among small-college women, clinched the doubles point by defeating Carpenter and Vasquez 6-1.
Baklouti and Akinnibi, ranked 16th, beat Alban and Nadja Ochsner 6-2.
The XULA women have won 46 of their last 55 dual matches
dating to Feb. 23, 2018.
