THIBODAUX, La. — Freshman
Valentina Largacha scored two clinching victories Sunday to help Xavier University
of Louisiana women's tennis defeat Nicholls 4-0.
XULA's women, 11-4 and ranked third in the NAIA,
defeated Nicholls, 4-10 and an NCAA Division I member, for the first time since 2004.
It was XULA's fifth road victory in four days; the first four occurred Thursday through
Saturday at Mobile, Ala., and gave XULA its first Southern States Athletic Conference
regular-season championship.
Largacha and
Angelica De Vincenzis rallied from a 4-2
deficit to defeat Morgan Forshag and Nuria Martin Lopez 6-4 on the second court and clinch
the doubles point. Largacha ended the dual when she defeated Nikita Pinto 6-1, 6-3 at No. 6 singles.
All-Americans
Lailaa Bashir and
Angela Charles-Alfred
also won in doubles and singles. Bashir and Charles-Alfred defeated Simona Maksimovic and Carla Bouygues
6-1 at No. 1 doubles. In singles Bashir beat Bouygues 6-4, 6-1 on court two, and Charles-Alfred
defeated Laura Lopez 6-1, 6-0 on court three.
Coupled with the 4-0 victory by the XULA men at Nicholls
earlier in the day, it marks the first time that both XULA teams defeated a non-HBCU member of NCAA
Division I on the same day.
The XULA women will visit Southern Mississippi
at noon Saturday, play host to Nicholls at 2 p.m. March 31,
then travel to Mobile, Ala., for the Southern States Athletic Conference Tournament April 15-17.
