Champion Charles-Alfred earns Southern States weekly honor

        NEW ORLEANS — Xavier University of Louisiana's Angela Charles-Alfred is the Southern States Athletic Conference Player of the Week in women's tennis for March 15-21.
        Charles-Alfred, a senior from Saint-Pierre, Martinique, was 5-0 in singles and, with Lailaa Bashir, 4-0 in doubles to help XULA win 5-of-5 dual matches in four days, its first SSAC regular-season championship and its first victory since 2004 against NCAA Division I Nicholls.
        Friday against NAIA No. 4 William Carey, Charles-Alfred earned victories against ITA NAIA No. 47 Valeriya Shurbina in singles (6-2, 6-2) and No. 22 doubles team Nadine Geschke and Wijitbanjong Pakkaro (6-2).
        Sunday at Nicholls in a 4-0 XULA victory, Charles-Alfred and Bashir defeated Simona Maksimovic and Carla Bouygues 6-1 in doubles, then Charles-Alfred defeated Laura Lopez 6-1, 6-0 in singles.
        XULA's Saturday dual match at Southern Miss has been canceled. Next for XULA's women and men: 2 p.m. March 31 — one week from Wednesday — against Nicholls at XULA Tennis Center.
