NEW ORLEANS — Xavier University of
Louisiana trailed through three matches, then won on the first three singles courts in straight sets Thursday to earn a 4-2 women's tennis
victory against Nicholls and a season sweep of its NCAA Division I opponent.
It was the second victory in 12 days for XULA, 12-4 and
ranked third in the NAIA, against the Colonels (4-12).
XULA erased its deficit — and extended
its season-best win streak to six — when
Lailaa Bashir defeated Simona Maksimovic 6-3, 6-0 on court one,
Angela Charles-Alfred beat Carla Bouygues 6-2, 6-2 on court two and
Farah Baklouti defeated Nuria Martin Lopez 6-2, 6-4 on court three.
Baklouti, who clinched, scored her second comeback of the day.
She and
Kyra Akinnibi trailed Nikita Pinto and Laura Lopez 3-0 on court three, but they
rallied for a 6-3 victory that clinched the doubles point for XULA.
The clinch was Baklouti's team-leading fourth
of the season and the 13th of her career.
Bashir and Charles-Alfred defeated
Maksimovic and Bouygues 6-1 on court one. Bashir and Charles-Alfred, ranked third in the NAIA
and a two-time ITA NAIA national champion, are 9-0 in their last 11 doubles matches.
"Today was a very tough day to play in the conditions that we played,"
XULA head coach
Alan Green said of an 18 mph wind from the north. "It was tough out there,
but we hung tough and came out with the win. I'm proud of us and how we got the job done."
XULA, winner at home of its last 11 dual matches and 21 of its last 22,
will play host to Rust at noon Saturday.
