MOBILE, Ala. — Xavier University
of Louisiana women's tennis defeated William Carey 4-0 Sunday in the championship match
of the Southern States Athletic Conference Tournament at Copeland-Cox Mobile Tennis Center.
XULA — 18-5 and winner of 12 of its
last 13 — received the SSAC's automatic bid to NAIA nationals, which will begin
May 11 at this same venue.
Angela Charles-Alfred,
Lailaa Bashir and
Farah Baklouti won in doubles and singles for XULA. Baklouti clinched on the fourth singles
court with her 6-2, 6-1 victory against Nadine Geschke. Charles-Alfred defeated Valeriya Shurbina 6-2, 6-0
on court three, and Bashir beat Mariana Prieto 6-1, 6-2 on court two.
Charles-Alfred and Bashir clinched the doubles point
on court one with their 7-5 victory against Wijitbanjong Pakkaro and Geschke.
Baklouti and
Kyra Akinnibi won 6-0 on court three against Nastassia Chamoun and Prieto.
This is XULA's first end-of-season tournament championship
since winning an NAIA unaffiliated group title in 2014. XULA's most recent conference tournament
title had occurred in the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference in 2010. XULA's women's and men's tennis programs are in their
first season of affiliate membership with the SSAC.
XULA won the SSAC regular-season championship in March
and, including the tournament, did not surrender a point in any of its seven dual matches against league opponents.
That cumulative score was 34-0.
