MOBILE, Ala. — Xavier University of Louisiana
women's tennis rolled into the quarterfinals of the NAIA National Championship tournament
as the result of a 4-0 victory Wednesday against Lindsey Wilson.
XULA (20-5) will play another Kentucky school, Union,
at 9 a.m. Thursday. It's a rematch of their April 9 meeting, which Union won 4-3 at rhe IWU Invitational.
That's the only loss in XULA's last 15 dual matches.
Lailaa Bashir,
Angela Charles-Alfred and
Angelica De Vincenzis
won in doubles and singles. Bashir clinched with her 6-2, 6-2 victory against Lucia Mora on the second singles court.
Clinching the doubles point were
Kyra Akinnibi and
Farah Baklouti
on the third court with their 7-5 victory against Parisa Rachdanone and Salome Sposetti.
Charles-Alfred defeated Reshma Challarpu 6-0, 6-3 on the third court, and De Vincenzis beat
Sposetti 6-3, 6-1 on the fifth.
Bashir and Charles-Alfred, the ITA's third-ranked
NAIA doubles team, defeated Mora and Alexandra Parra 6-2. De Vincenzis and
Valentina Largacha
beat Challarpu and Carla Alibert 6-4.
Charles-Alfred extended her win streaks to 15 matches in doubles and 14 in
singles. XULA has won six straight duals since the loss to Union, five against top-15 opponents.
XULA advanced to the quarterfinals for the sixth time —
all in the last eight tournaments. XULA reached 20 wins for the second time ever and the first time since 2005, when it was 22-8.
Lindsey Wilson finished 16-3.
The XULA-Union winner will play Keiser or LSU-Alexandria
in the semifinals at 9 a.m. Friday.
