Tianna Dixon won two women's singles matches apiece Friday for Xavier University of Louisiana to reach the quarterfinals of the HBCU National Tennis Championships.
        Akinnibi, who helped the Gold Nuggets reach the NAIA national semifinals this past season, defeated Bethune-Cookman's Afrika Smith 6-2, 6-4 and Tuskegee's Mikiah Stephenson 6-1, 6-0 in the A-bracket. Niyonkuru beat Southern's Takalani Molaoa 6-2, 6-2 and Tuskegee's Dakyoung Heo 6-2, 6-1 in that same bracket.
        Dixon opened her college career with a pair of C-bracket victories against NCAA Division I opponents: 6-4, 6-3 against Alcorn State's Jamie Edwards and 6-2, 5-7, 1-0 (14-12) against Florida A&M's Claudia Sumaia.
        The tournament will resume at 8 a.m. EDT Saturday with doubles matches. South Fulton Tennis Center — 5645 Mason Road, College Park, GA 30349, phone 770-306-4742 — is the tournament venue. College Park is a suburb southwest of Atlanta.
