NEW ORLEANS —
Xavier University of Louisiana's top-seeded
Kareemah Muhammad defeated LSU-Alexandria's
Alicia Romero Gomez 6-1, 6-7 (4-7), 1-0 (10-5) Saturday to advance to the women's
singles A-bracket semifinals of the NAIA Gulf Intercollegiate Tennis Association Regional Championships.
Muhammad will play William Carey's fifth-seeded

Admission and parking are free.
The Gold Nuggets'
Yi Chen Pao won the
singles B-bracket with a 6-0, 6-4 decision against Avery Frierson of city rival Loyola.
Muhammad, a sophomore, reached a regional semifinal
for the second straight year. She and
Valaine Clarke won the 2021 doubles title.
But Saturday Muhammad and Clarke were eliminated in the quarterfinals.
Pao is playing her fifth season of college tennis,
all for XULA. Her fourth season was in 2019-20, when the spring season was
terminated in mid-March because of the COVID-19 pandemic. The NAIA granted athletes
from that season an additional year of eligibility, which Pao is using in 2022-23.
Pao was a summa cum laude XULA graduate in 2020 and is taking classes in graduate school this semester.
