VICKSBURG, Miss. —
Xavier University of Louisiana softball recorded firsts Sunday
as it won twice on the final day of the River City Classic.
The Gold Nuggets won 8-2
against Alcorn State, then 11-6 against Southeastern Baptist for
their first victory of the season, their first-ever victory against
an NCAA Division I opponent (Alcorn) and their first-ever game
with double-digit runs.
It's the third time in the program's
two-year history that XULA won twice in one day.
Against Alcorn,
Mecolett Bradley
hit a two-run single in the first inning and a two-run double in the sixth.
Tamia Washington and Shay Angelle also drove in runs in the sixth, when XULA
scored five times.
Starter Carina Chargois and
reliever
Brittany Ensley combined on a one-hitter against Alcorn. Chargois, a freshman,
allowed the hit, walked five and struck out three in four innings. Both runs Chargois
allowed were unearned.
Ensley allowed one walk in a scoreless three innings.
XULA lost 8-7 Saturday to Alcorn.
Ensley added two more scoreless innings
against Southeastern Baptist in relief of starter and winner
Vivionna Robles.
XULA is 2-4 this season and finished 2-2 in the River City Classic.
The other loss Saturday was 8-4 to Jackson State.
XULA will return to Mississippi
for two games Friday and two Saturday in Hattiesburg. The Gold Nuggets will
play NAIA No. 16 William Carey and Georgetown (Ky.) both days.
