NEW ORLEANS — Xavier University of Louisiana, in its final softball games before its Red River Athletic Conference debut, dropped a home doubleheader Wednesday against Mobile at Wesley Barrow Stadium. The Rams won 12-2 in the first game, then 7-4.
The Gold Nuggets (4-8) never led in either game, but Tamia Washington's bases-loaded triple with none out in the second game keyed a four-run third inning that cut Mobile's lead to 5-4.
XULA's leadoff hitter, Alison Curlin, reached base safely five times. Curlin, Washington and Chenai Keyes finished the doubleheader with two hits apiece.
Mobile's Jaden Morace finished with four hits, including two triples, and four RBIs. Teammate Emily Butts pitched a complete game in the opener and struck out nine.
Mobile is 6-0 and received votes in the NAIA preseason coaches poll. XULA, in its second year of intercollegiate competition, will play RRAC doubleheaders at 1 p.m. Friday at LSU-Alexandria and 1 p.m. Saturday at Texas A&M-Texarkana.
