NEW ORLEANS —
Tianna Dixon remained unbeaten in March and led
Xavier University
of Louisiana's women to a 6-1
victory Friday against city rival Dillard at XULA Tennis Center.
The Gold Nuggets (9-8)
climbed above .500 for the first time this season. They've won a season-high
five in a row and seven of their last eight dual matches.
Dixon, a freshman,
and
Ariana Stephens clinched the doubles point by defeating Kayla Hennigan and
Hafsa Sanhaji 6-2 on court two. Dixon clinched the dual
by defeating Sanhaji 6-1, 6-2 at No. 3 singles.
Dixon is 5-0 in singles
and 4-0 in doubles during March.
Dillard, 1-9 in its first tennis season
since 2005, had only four of its five
women available, and as a result the Lady Bleu Devils forfeited matches
at No. 3 doubles and No. 5 and 6 singles.
Also winning in singles for XULA
were
Valaine Clarke in a 6-1, 6-0 decision against Hennigan at No. 4
and
Juliette Finch at No. 1 in a 7-6 (7-5), 2-6, 1-0 (11-9) decision
against Kaavya Palani. Finch led 5-1 and 6-2 in the super-tiebreaker, then rallied
from an 8-7 deficit.
XULA traveled to Pensacola, Fla.,
after the victory to prepare for a 10 a.m. Saturday match against
West Florida, ranked 24th in NCAA Division II.
