In concert: Everything works well as Gold Nuggets sweep Jarvis Christian

NEW ORLEANS — It was softball harmony, Xavier University of Louisiana style, in a Sunday doubleheader sweep of Jarvis Christian — 5-0, then 9-1 — at Wesley Barrow Stadium:
        •  XULA pitchers Carina Chargois and Vivionna Robles threw complete games.
        •  The Gold Nuggets were errorless in the field.
        •  XULA outhit the Lady Bulldogs 17-7 and had big innings in each game: a three-run third that made it 4-0 in the opener, then a seven-run fourth in the second game that broke a tie at 1.
"I'm proud of my babies," XULA head coach Leslie Ballard said of her team, which finished 3-3 in the three-day homestand and is 11-20 overall and 7-7 in the Red River Athletic Conference. "We redeemed ourselves after yesterday (doubleheader loss to NAIA No. 14 Texas A&M-Texarkana). We got timely hits and timely runs."
Chargois, a freshman right-hander, pitched the first seven-inning shutout in the program's two-year, 52-game history. Chargois allowed four hits and two walks and struck out six. Also effective was Robles, who allowed three hits and one walk in a five-inning mercy-rule game.
Brittany Ensley singled home Madison Winston and Mecolett Bradley to put XULA ahead to stay 3-1 in the opener, and Shay Angelle followed with a single to score Chenai Keyes.
XULA's decisive fourth inning in the second game included Bradley's bases-loaded walk — one of four free passes issued that inning by Jarvis Christian's Monique Montes — Keyes' two-run single and Mekayla Marshall's two-run double.
Ensley and Alison Curlin had two hits apiece for XULA in the opener, and Winston made a superb running catch in center field for the first out of the fourth inning. In the second game Keyes and Kiera Evans had two hits apiece, and Alexis Richardson scored twice.
Jarvis Christian is 15-14 and 3-7.
Next for XULA will be, argubly, its most difficult matchup to date: a 3 p.m. Wednesday doubleheader at the University of Mobile, which is 30-0, ranked sixth in the NAIA and No. 2 in the NAIA with a team ERA of 1.13.
