NEW ORLEANS —
Kareemah Muhammad defeated a ranked opponent, and
Juliette Finch and
Tianna Dixon scored comeback victories to help NAIA No. 13 Xavier University of Louisiana earn a 5-1 women's tennis decision at home Thursday against fifth-ranked William Carey.
Muhammad defeated Valeriya Shurbina, No. 24 in the ITA NAIA singles rankings, 6-3, 6-1 on the first court. Finch trailed Marina Prieto 5-2 in the first set before rallying for a 7-6 (7-5), 6-1 victory on court two, and Dixon, down 5-3 in the second set, rallied past Sabrina Goetzen 2-6, 7-5, 6-0 and clinched the team victory.
Muhammad, Finch and Dixon are freshmen. So is
Valaine Clarke, who defeated Wijitbanjong Pakkaro 7-5, 6-7 (4-7), 1-0 (10-5) on court four. XULA's only victorious non-freshman was sophomore
Valentina Largacha, who beat Alicia Kloos 7-5, 6-2 on court five.
The doubles matches were not played.
XULA is 12-12 — it was the Gold Nuggets' first victory this season against a top-10 opponent — and William Carey is 9-3.
"It was nice once again to play a ranked NAIA team with our full lineup," XULA head coach
Alan Green said. "Our ladies were ready for this challenge. We've been talking about winning matches like this, and it finally came together for us today.
"I'm really, really proud of the way
Tianna Dixon fought back and won. That was huge for us and especially huge for Tianna. Hopefully we can keep the arrow trending up for the rest of the season."
The Gold Nuggets will close the regular season in a 2:30 p.m. Tuesday match at NCAA Division I University of New Orleans, then play host to the Red River Athletic Conference Tournament April 28-30.
