NEW ORLEANS —
Patricia Martinez Molina defeated
Lindsey Dixon 4-6, 6-4, 6-1 on the sixth singles court Saturday to
give NAIA No. 4 LSU-Alexandria a 4-3 victory against 11th-ranked Xavier University of Louisiana
in the women's championship match of the Red River Athletic Conference Tournament at XULA Tennis Center.
LSUA is 17-0 — three victories against the Gold Nuggets, all at XULA —
and XULA is 13-14. The Generals earned the RRAC's automatic bid to NAIA nationals, but the Gold Nuggets'
ranking will put them in strong position to earn one of 10 at-large berths to the 24-team tournament.
The NAIA will announce the qualifiers and pairings Tuesday.
XULA lost the doubles point and trailed 3-1 before tying
the score on victories by
Valentina Largacha and
Kareemah Muhammad.
Largacha defeated Annemart Kleijn 6-2, 6-4 on court five, and Muhammad beat Candela Bonivardi 6-3, 6-4 on court one.
Tianna Dixon produced XULA's other victory — 6-1, 6-1 against Maria Alvarez on court three.
Muhammad, Dixon and Largacha were named to the eight-member
all-tournament team; Martinez Molina earned MVP.
"It was a hard-fought match we came up short in,"
19th-year XULA head coach
Alan Green said. "My hat goes off to (LSUA coach) Melinda (Descant)
and her team for getting the job done. They played very well from top to bottom.
They were too much for us today, so congrats to them."
