COLLEGE PARK, Ga. — Xavier University
of Louisiana women's tennis freshman
McKenna Wheatley opened her college career with
four victories and zero losses Thursday in the HBCU National Championships at South Fulton Tennis Center.
Wheatley, from the Jackson suburb of Madison, Miss., won twice
in the singles B-bracket. She defeated Dayna Jackson of Tuskegee 6-0, 6-2 in the round of 64,
then beat Lafi Joao of North Carolina Central 6-7 (5-7), 6-0, 1-0 (11-9) in the round of 32.
In the doubles B-bracket, Wheatley and
Tianna Dixon
won 7-6 (8-6) against Shaw's Anja Antonojevic and Sewal Ozseker in the round of 32, then
defeated Albany State's Bianca Leao and Carla Sorroche 6-0 in the round of 16.
XULA sophomores
Kareemah Muhammad and
Valaine Clarke,
seeded first in the doubles A-bracket, defeated Grambling's Georgina Kaindoah and Lungile Ntuli
6-3 in the quarterfinals. Muhammad and Clarke will complete Friday a quarterfinal tiebreaker against
Alabama State's Urska Velec and Bea Acena.
The three-day tournament will conclude Saturday.
College Park is an Atlanta suburb. Other women's teams competing
are Alabama A&M, Alcorn State, Bowie State, Clark Atlanta, Florida A&M,
Grambling, Johnson C. Smith, LeMoyne-Owen and Tennessee State.
