       NEW ORLEANS —
Lejaune George entered Xavier University of Louisiana's men's cross country record book Friday with a time of 16 minutes, 56.49 seconds for 5,000 meters in the University of New Orleans Opener at Lake Oaks Park.
George became the fourth Gold Rush freshman to break 17 minutes at that distance.
Kwame Jackson — in his third season as a XULA graduate assistant for cross country and track and field — set the school freshman record of 16:12.13 at the Four Points by Sheraton Loyola Wolfpack Invitational on Sept. 10, 2011.
Clydarius Everett (2016) and Samuel Abdellatif (2018) were the other Gold Rush freshmen to break 17 minutes in the 5K.
This was George's first collegiate race. He finished 44th out of 77 runners and was faster than 19 NCAA Division I runners. XULA is a longtime NAIA member.
XULA did not qualify for team scoring because only four runners finished.
Dominick Baptiste was 55th in 17:43.39,
Steven Wilson was 68th in 19:24.30, and
Ahmad Wilson was 69th in 19:55.31.
Damoy Boyd started the race but dropped out.
Tulane had four of the six fastest men. The Green Wave's Aaron Gilliam won in 14:43.30, nearly six seconds better than runner-up and teammate Bradley Makuvire, the 2021 Southland Conference individual champion while at Southeastern Louisiana. Tulane was team champion with 23 points, and LSU was second with 51.
Next for XULA's men and women will be the Nicholls Invitational Sept. 17 at Thibodaux, La.
