NEW ORLEANS —
India Mastin's debut Friday with Xavier University of Louisiana women's cross country was impressive. She produced the program's second-fastest time at 4,000 meters — 16 minutes, 26.51 seconds — in the University of New Orleans Opener at Lake Oaks Park.
Mastin's time was the Gold Nuggets' best since Catherine Fakler ran a school-record 15:34 at the Mississippi College Opener on Aug. 30, 2013.
Mastin, a junior and a transfer from Cumberland University, finished 48th out of 64 runners and was faster than eight NCAA Division I runners. XULA is a longtime NAIA member.
XULA did not qualify for team scoring because it had only four entries.
Reagan Collins was 58th in 17:55.97,
Amber Parks was 58th in 18:47.25, and
Jalyn Jenkins was 62nd in 20:05.80.
Louisiana-Lafayette's Sophie Daigle was first in 13:07.64, nearly 10 seconds faster than runner-up Lorena Rangel Bates of LSU. Seven teams scored; LSU won with 38 points, and Tulane was second with 56.
Next for XULA's women and men will be the Nicholls Invitational Sept. 17 at Thibodaux, La.
