        NEW ORLEANS — For the third consecutive year, Xavier University of Louisiana is playing host to an Intercollegiate Tennis Association regional tournament.
        The 2022 NAIA Gulf ITA Regional Championships will begin Friday at two sites: XULA Tennis Center (3619 Pine St., zip 70125) and and City Park/Pepsi Tennis Center (5900 Marconi Drive, zip 70124).
        Eleven schools from five states are entered. Men's and women's teams from XULA, Blue Mountain, Mobile, Our Lady of the Lake, SCAD Atlanta, Texas A&M-Texarkana, William Carey and city rivals Dillard and Loyola will compete. Also entered are the women's teams of LSU-Alexandria and LSU-Shreveport.
        Champions in men's and women's A-bracket singles and men's and women's doubles will qualify automatically for the ITA Cup Oct. 13-16 at Rome, Ga. Men's and women's B-bracket singles champions will not qualify.
        Championship matches will be played Sunday at XULA. Admission is free at both venues.
        It will be chamber-of-commerce weather: sunny Friday and Saturday, partly cloudy Sunday. Timeanddate.com predicts high temperatures of 80 degrees Friday, 82 Saturday and 84 Sunday, with a north wind and zero-percent chance of precipitation all three days.
        This will be XULA's second tournament of the fall semester. The Gold Nuggets and Gold Rush competed Sept. 15-17 in the HBCU National Championships at College Park, Ga.; the XULA women repeated as team champion.
