CLINTON, Miss. —
Sophomore
Lejaune George ran the second-fastest
8,000-meter time in Xavier University of Louisiana men's cross country
history — 26 minutes, 35.8 seconds — and
placed 26th out of 209 runners Friday morning in the Watson Collegiate Classic at Choctaw Trails.
George's time was the Gold Rush's fastest since
sophomore Farris Gransberry ran a school-record 25:54 in a seventh-place finish at the
Gulf Coast Athletic Conference Championships in New Orleans on Nov. 7, 1998.
XULA's previous 8K best at
Choctaw Trails was senior Matt Pieri's 26:54.21 in winning the 2012
GCAC individual championship.
George broke XULA's 6K mark
Sept. 15 with 20:00.4 at the LSU Invitational in Baton Rouge, La.
Also running for the Gold Rush were
Landan Gillespie, 89th in 28:35.2;
Zachery Williams, 90th in 28:39.1;
Skyler Madison, 127th in 29:49.8;
and
Damoy Boyd, 138th in 30:08.5. The Gold Rush finished 12th out of 24 four-year schools
in team scoring, and one of the teams XULA outscored was NCAA Division I Louisiana Tech.
In the women's race,
the Gold Nuggets'
Skylah Barton was 90th out of 168 runners, and her time for 6,000 meters was 27:00.9.
Also running for XULA were
Jalyn Jenkins, 133rd in 30:32.6;
Kayla Jackson, 150th in 33:25.6;
Janell Nixon, 159th in 36:54.8;
and
Leojai Hibbert, 160th in 37:03.0. The Gold Nuggets were 20th out of 20 schools in team scoring.
Mississippi College, the host, won the men's and women's team and individual titles.
Jan Lukas Becker (23:29.8) led the men, and Jazmin Hernandez (21:33.7) led the women.
This was XULA's final meet before the Red River
Athletic Conference championships Nov. 3 at Texarkana, Texas.
