LAFAYETTE, La. —
Xavier University of Louisiana made more 3-pointers and free throws
than Louisiana-Lafayette, but the Ragin' Cajuns' dominance in other areas
helped them earn a 64-40 women's basketball exhibition victory Tuesday at the Cajundome.
Leading XULA were
Mary Wilkins with 11
points, Zaria Harleaux with 10 points — she made 8-of-10 free throws —
and Patricia Sosa Lora with a game-high 11 rebounds.
Ashlyn Jones, with 11 points, was
the Cajuns' only double-figure scorer.
The Cajuns outscored the Gold Nuggets
8-0 in the first five minutes and never lost the lead. The Cajuns led 30-17
at halftime and 49-30 through three quarters.
XULA had advantages of 4-0 in made 3-pointers
— the Cajuns attempted 14 — and 16-14 in made free throws.
But the Cajuns outshot the Gold Nuggets 36.8 to 26.3 percent from the floor
and made 15 more field goals than XULA. The Cajuns also had advanatges of 22-3
in second-chance points, 44-36 in rebounds and 44-10 in points in the paint.
The Cajuns committed six turnovers and gained 21.
XULA is a longtime NAIA member,
and the Cajuns play in NCAA Division I.
The Gold Nuggets, 3-0 in the regular season,
will break for Thanksgiving, then
visit Southwest (N.M.) Nov. 30 — one week from Thursday — in the Red River
Athletic Conference opener for both teams. Tip-off will be 5:30 p.m. MST. The Gold Nuggets' next home game will
start at 5:30 p.m. Dec. 14 against Texas College at the Convocation Center.
