VICKSBURG, Miss. —
Xavier University of Louisiana softball lost 6-5 Sunday to Alabama A&M,
then 9-4 to Jackson State to finish 1-3 in the River City Classic.
The Gold Nuggets (3-3) will return
to Mississippi Tuesday to play NAIA No. 12 William Carey in a 3 p.m. doubleheader at Hattiesburg.
XULA scored three times in the top of the first
inning and led 3-2 through four innings, but Alabama A&M took the lead for good
with a four-run fifth that included home runs by Venice Sanders and Zahria Jones.
XULA's offensive leaders against
Alabama A&M were
Madison Winston with three hits,
Mecolett Bradley with two hits
and two RBIs,
Melane Jimmie wirh two hits and
Shay Angelle and
Alisha Wallace with RBIs.
Angelle tripled home a run in the first.
The Gold Nuggets never led Jackson State.
It was 3-2 through 3 1/2 innings, then the Tigers pulled away with a five-run fourth inning
that included Samiyyah Huckabee's two-run home run and Jace Jackson's two-run triple.
XULA's
Alexis Richardson had three RBIs against
Jackson State, including a two-run triple in the sixth. Bradley tripled, and
Kadence Means doubled.
Jackson State collected 11 walks against
three XULA pitchers.
