OVERLAND PARK, Kan. —
Patricia Martinez Molina defeated
Tianna Dixon 7-5, 7-5 on the sixth singles court Friday to
give third-ranked LSU-Alexandria a 4-3 victory against sixth-ranked Xavier University of Louisiana
in the women's first round of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association NAIA National Indoor Championships.
The Gold Nuggets (0-2) will play 11th-ranked Lindsey Wilson
at 3 p.m. Saturday in the consolation semifinals. All eight teams will play three times in this inaugural event.
XULA trailed 3-1 before
Kareemah Muhammad
and
Valentina Largacha won singles matches. But Martinez Molina — 5-0 in singles against XULA the past three seasons —
clinched for the Generals and advanced them to a semifinal against second-ranked Keiser.

Muhammad, No. 19 in the ITA NAIA singles rankings, defeated
No. 9 Candela Bonivardi 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 on the first court. Largacha, trailing 4-1 in the third set,
defeated Maria Alvarez 6-2, 4-6, 5-4, retired on the fifth court. XULA's
Mbali Langa won on the second court,
7-5, 6-2 against Alicia Romero Gomez.
LSUA won the doubles point, but winning on court three
were the Gold Nuggets'
McKenna Wheatley and Dixon, 7-6 (7-0) against Romero Gomez and Alvarez.
LSUA is 4-0 against XULA the last two seasons.
The other first-round winners: top-ranked Georgia Gwinnett,
4-0 against host Kansas Wesleyan; fourth-ranked SCAD Savannah, 4-1 against 10th-ranked Indiana Wesleyan;
and Keiser, 4-0 against Lindsey Wilson.
