MOBILE, Ala. — Xavier University of Louisiana's women's tennis season ended Thursday with a 4-2 loss to Southeastern (Fla.) in the quarterfinals at NAIA nationals.
The Gold Nuggets (22-7) were seeded third and ranked fourth. Wednesday they tied the school record for victories in a season.
Beatrice Letizia clinched for the Fire (14-7) with her 7-6 (7-5), 6-1 victory against
Tianna Dixon on the third singles court.
XULA won the doubles point, and the Gold Nuggets'
McKenna Wheatley won at No. 6 singles for the second consecutive day. Wheatley, a freshman, defeated Irene Lopez 6-1, 7-6 (7-1).
Kareemah Muhammad and
Valaine Clarke clinched the doubles point for XULA with a 6-4 victory against Martina Picardi and Simone Simas on court two. The Gold Nuggets' other doubles victory was on court one, where
Mbali Langa and
Valentina Largacha defeated Micah Sypert and Priscila Baptista 6-3.
The Muhammad/Clarke and Langa/Largacha teams won for the second consecutive day.
The match started two hours late because the men's round of 16, rained out Wednesday, started at 8 a.m. The women's quarterfinals endured a 2 1/2-hour lightning/rain delay during the afternoon.
Southeastern, seeded sixth and ranked sixth, reached the semifinals for the first time — the Fire's other appearance at nationals was in 2022 — and will play six-time defending champion Georgia Gwinnett at 9 a.m. CDT Friday.
