NEW ORLEANS — Xavier University of Louisiana's women lost the doubles point but rallied for a 4-3 victory Monday against SCAD Savannah at XULA Tennis Center.
McKenna Wheatley clinched for the Gold Nuggets on court four with her 6-3, 7-6 (9-7) victory against Cherry Xiang. That gave XULA a 4-1 lead. Wheatley, who trailed 5-1 in games during the second set, is 8-0 in dual-match singles this season.
Also winning for XULA were
Mbali Langa on court one, 7-6 (7-1), 7-5 against Alessia Piccoliori;
Amira Bergaoui on court two, 6-2, 6-4 against Yue Yu; and
Kyra Akinnibi on court three, 6-4, 6-1 against Priya Sukkanha.
Langa and Wheatley won 6-2 on the first doubles court against Piccoliori and Francina Puig Llompart.
The Gold Nuggets (10-3) — No. 5 in the NAIA coaches poll and second in the inaugural ITA NAIA computerized team rankings — are 5-0 at home this season and 7-3 against ranked opponents. The Bees (4-3) are 11th in the coaches poll and 16th in the computer rankings.
XULA's women and men will play host to SCAD Atlanta at 1 p.m. Wednesday.
