Xavier University of Louisiana defeated SCAD Atlanta 7-0 Wednesday
at XULA Tennis Center — the Gold Nuggets' eighth victory this season
against a ranked opponent.
The XULA women —
No. 5 in the NAIA coaches poll and No. 2 in the ITA NAIA computerized team rankings —
are 11-3 overall, 6-0 at home
and won six of their last seven. The Gold Nuggets are 8-3 against ranked teams.
SCAD Atlanta (5-6) is 19th in the poll and 21st in the computer rankings.
Amira Bergaoui,
Valentina Largacha
and
Kyra Akinnibi won in doubles and singles. Bergaoui and Largacha defeated Elizabeth Allen
and Anastasija Stojanovic 6-2 on court two, then Akinnibi and
Kareemah Muhammad clinched
the doubles point on court three with their 6-2 victory against Nadia Brunzlow and Mariana Arguedas.
Bergaoui defeated Giulia Leali 6-1, 6-1 on court two,
Akinnibi made it 3-1 with her 6-1, 6-1 victory on court three against Begona Benjumeda, then
Mbali Langa clinched on court one by beating Stojanovic 6-0, 7-5.
Largacha won 6-4, 6-2 against Arguedas,
McKenna Wheatley defeated Brunzlow 6-1, 6-1, and
Sydney Green won 6-4, 6-4 against Allen.
There's plenty for the Gold Nuggets to crow about in singles:
• Wheatley is 9-0 this semester.
• Bergaoui, a freshman who enrolled
at XULA in January, is 9-1 — 9-0 against NAIA opponents.
• Akinnibi, a 2021 second-team NAIA All-American who rejoined the
Gold Nuggets in January, is 8-1.
• Largacha won five of her last six decisions.
XULA's women and men will play their next three
in Florida, beginning with neutral-site Sunday matches at 1 p.m. EDT against Southeastern (Fla.)
at Patch Reef Park Tennis Center in Boca Raton.
