       SAN ANTONIO, Texas — Freshmen
Amireeya Malveaux,
Calbey Parker,
Maia Tyler and
Kayla Evans helped Xavier University of Louisiana earn a 5-4 victory Friday against Texas A&M-San Antonio in the opener of a Red River Athletic Conference softball doubleheader.
The Jaguars gained a split by winning the second game 19-5.
The Gold Nuggets will stay in San Antonio to play Our Lady of the Lake — No. 1 in the NAIA coaches poll and 29-1 on the field — in a noon CDT Saturday Red River doubleheader.
Malveaux and Parker had two hits apiece in the opener, with Parker scoring three times and Malveaux producing a sesson-high two RBIs. XULA never trailed, and Malveaux's two-out single in the fifth inning scored
Madison Winston with the fifth run.
Tyler (4-4) pitched the first four innings to earn the victory, and Evans worked the final three — she got out of a bases-loaded jam in the seventh — to produce the Gold Nuggets' first save this season.
Five runs were far from enough for XULA in game two. TAMUSA scored 10 runs in the first inning and eight in the second. XULA pitchers issued five bases-loaded walks, four in the first. Rachel Warren and Jordyn Henry had three RBIs apiece for the Jaguars.
Parker had two RBIs for XULA in the second game, and
Rayne Althaus and
Caitlin Buford both doubled.
XULA is 7-9 overall and 5-5 in the RRAC. Texas A&M-San Antonio is 16-8 and 6-6. They're tied for fifth place in the conference with Texas A&M-Texarkana, also 6-6 after a doubleheader split at Houston-Victoria.
