SAN ANTONIO, Texas — Valaine Clarke won 6-3, 7-5 against Alexandra Mille on the fourth singles court Friday to clinch Xavier University of Louisiana's 4-2 women's tennis victory against Our Lady of the Lake in the semifinals of the Red River Athletic Conference Tournament.
The Gold Nuggets (20-5), seeded first in this event and ranked third in the NAIA, will play second-seeded and 13th-ranked LSU-Alexandria (14-4) for the championship at 10 a.m. CDT Saturday at Blossom Tennis Center. That winner will receive an automatic bid to NAIA nationals, which will begin May 14 in Mobile, Ala.
XULA and LSUA will meet in the Red River final for third consecutive year. The Generals won 4-3 in 2022, and the Gold Nuggets won 4-2 in 2023 — XULA was the site of those matches.
XULA's tournament finals streak includes a 4-0 victory in 2021 against William Carey in the Southern States.
LSUA defeated third-seeded LSU-Shreveport 4-0 in the first semifinal Friday.
It will be the second XULA-LSUA meeting this season. The Gold Nuggets defeated the Generals 5-2 at home in XULA's regular-season finale April 18.
Amira Bergaoui and Valentina Largacha clinched the doubles point for XULA when they defeated Lucia Popluharova and Saskia Vogelzang 6-2. Kareemah Muhammad and McKenna Wheatley earned XULA's other doubles victory, 6-0 against Ana Ossio and Sofia Gonzalez.
Kyra Akinnibi defeated Ossio 6-1, 6-0 on court three — it was Akinnibi's 12th consecutive singles victory — and Largacha beat Gonzalez 6-1, 6-2 on court six.
In the first semifinal, LSUA's Olivia Scattini and Lucie Ivanova won in doubles and singles against LSUS, and Scattini clinched with her 7-5, 6-2 victory against Pierina Lescher on court one.
