ALEXANDRIA, La. —
Xavier University of Louisiana took advantage of Texas Wesleyan's
shorthanded roster to produce a 5-0 women's tennis victory Friday against the Rams at the LSUA Tournament.
The Gold Nuggets — 14-5
and ranked fifth in the NAIA coaches poll and second in the ITA NAIA computerized rankings
— will play twice Saturday, the final day of the tournament, against Red River Athletic Conference opponents:
9 a.m. at Louisiana Christian in nearby Pineville, La.,
then 1 p.m. against Texas A&M-Texarkana at Alexandria City Courts.
The Rams (4-4) had four available players, and as a result
they forfeited three matches, including No. 5 and 6 singles.
Sydney Green and
Ariana Stephens
clinched the doubles point with their 6-4 victory against Carla Arce and Pauline Celedonio.
In singles,
Amira Bergaoui clinched with her 6-1, 6-3 victory against Zeynep Ege,
then
Valaine Clarke completed the shutout with her 2-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-5) victory against Paulina Hudson.
The victory was Clarke's first in singles this season.
Bergaoui, a freshman who enrolled at XULA in January, is 14-1 in singles — she won her last
six decisions — and 14-0 against NAIA opponents.
