MOBILE, Ala. — Xavier University of Louisiana women's tennis lost the doubles point, then got singles victories from Amira Bergaoui, Kyra Akinnibi, Kareemah Muhammad and McKenna Wheatley in a 4-1 decision Wednesday against William Carey in the round of 16 at NAIA nationals.
Wheatley clinched with a 6-2, 6-3 victory on court five against Sunny Logan. Wheatley, a sophomore, is 3-0 in singles at NAIA nationals in her two XULA seasons.
The Gold Nuggets (22-5) tied their record for season victories for the second straight year, and they advanced to the national quarterfinals for the sixth consecutive time and the eighth time in their last 10 attempts. They'll play Middle Georgia (15-5) at 1 p.m. CDT Thursday at Copeland-Cox Mobile Tennis Center.
