2024 Red River Athletic Conference Tournament information
LECOMPTE, La. — Cassandra Valdez and winning pitcher Ava Hernandez had three RBIs apiece Saturday to lead NAIA No. 1 and top-seeded Our Lady of the Lake to a 9-1 softball victory against Xavier University of Louisiana in the opening round of the Red River Athletic Conference Tournament.
The game was stopped after 4 1/2 innings because of the eight-run rule.
The Gold Nuggets, 13-25 and seeded eighth, will play fourth-seeded Louisiana Christian (28-20) in an elimination game at 3 p.m. Saturday at Champions Sportsplex.
Hernandez hit a two-run homer in the second inning. Valdez hit a three-run homer and Grace Ross a two-run triple during a seven-run third.
XULA had three hits, all singles, and scored in the fourth when
T'Auna Fenroy's groundout sent home
Rayne Althaus, who led off with a single up the middle.
Caitlin Buford and
Jada Hughes had the other XULA hits, and
Amaya Williams and
Calbey Parker walked twice apiece.
The victory was the 44th in a row for the Saints (48-1) and the 90th in their last 95 games dating to February 2023.
Louisiana Christian moved into the losers bracket after its 4-3, eight-inning loss to fifth-seeded Texas A&M-Texarkana.
