METAIRIE, La. —
Artur Rubim and
Gustavo Oliveira scored second-half goals Saturday to help Xavier University of Louisiana earn a 2-1 exhibition men's soccer victory against LSU-Eunice at Lafreniere Park.
It was the first of three Gold Rush exhibitions in six-days against two-year schools. XULA will visit Jones College at 6 p.m. Monday in Ellisvile, Miss.
It was scoreless at halftime. Rubim — a sophomore in his first XULA appearance after transferring from NCAA Division II Tusculum — scored in the 53rd minute on a header after
Sebastian Pinto's pass from the right corner. About 25 minutes later, Oliveira — XULA's leading scorer in its debut season of 2023, when he was Red River Athletic Conference offensive player of the year and newcomer of the year — beat goalkeeper Landon Sorrell on a penalty kick to make it 2-0.
Head coach
Gonzalo Carranza substituted liberally after the second goal, and the Bengals answered when Chase Duvernay scored. But LSUE produced no shots on goal thereafter.
XULA goalkeeper
Breno Zanolla played the entire game.
XULA's regular-season opener will start at 7 p.m. Aug. 18 at William Carey in Hattiesburg, Miss.
