Asadah Ma'at and
Mbali Langa won three-set singles matches Friday to help Xavier University
of Louisiana clinch a 4-2 women's tennis victory against Middle Georgia
in the opening round of the ITA NAIA National Indoor Championships at Overland Park Racquet Club.
The Gold Nuggets (1-0) advanced to the semifinals for the second
consecutive year. They will play second-ranked
Keiser at 3 p.m. Saturday.
Ma'at gave XULA a 3-2 lead when she defeated Yana Prihach 6-2, 3-6, 6-2 on the fifth court,
then Langa clinched on the first court with her 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 victory against Berta Castello.
Langa and
McKenna Wheatley, the NAIA's top-ranked doubles team,
won 6-3 against Castello and Tamanna Takoria, but Middle Georgia (0-2) won the doubles point.
Wheatley defeated Aya El Marrasse Zarioui 6-3, 6-3 at No. 4 singles, and
Amira Bergaoui
won 7-6 (10-8), 6-4 against Marina Prieto Gonfaus at No. 2.
XULA is seeded third and Middle Georgia sixth in this eight-team event.
