16 Thursday to rally Xavier University to a 56-48 Gulf Coast Athletic Conference
women's basketball victory against William Carey.
The Gold Nuggets (20-10, 12-5 GCAC) reached 20 victories for the sixth consecutive
time and the 14th time in 15 seasons.
Xavier trailed 20-7 after nearly 11 minutes, but Cleaves scored 13 of her team's
next 17 points to tie the score at 24. William Carey led 28-26 at halftime.
Turnbull scored 13 second-half points for Xavier, which took the lead for good
at 43-41 after
LaTashia Wise's two free throws with 8:34 remaining.
Dominee Matthews scored 10 points for Xavier. Turnbull led the Nuggets with eight rebounds.
Nikki Smith scored 14 points and Leironica Evans 11 for William Carey (9-14, 6-11),
which didn't attempt a free throw after making 11 of 12 in the first half.
It was the eighth time this season that Xavier limited an opponent to less than
50 points and the 13th consecutive time that the Nuggets defeated the Lady Saders.
Xavier's next game will start at 5 p.m. Saturday against city and GCAC opponent
Dillard. The game will be played at Dent Hall, making it Dillard's first game on
its campus since Hurricane Katrina.
