NEW ORLEANS —
Jarryn Cleaves, playing in her school-record 133rd game,
scored 14 points and grabbed seven rebounds Thursday to lead NAIA No. 24 Xavier
University of Louisiana to a 65-49 women's basketball victory over SUNO in the
quarterfinals of the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference Tournament at The Barn.
The Gold Nuggets (25-6) reached 25 victories for the 10th time in 14 seasons and
advanced to the semifinals for the seventh consecutive time. Xavier will play Mobile
at 7 p.m. Saturday at The Barn.
Cleaves had 11 points and five rebounds in the first half to lead Xavier, the
tournament's No. 2 seed, to a 37-28 advantage at the break. Cleaves left the game for
good with 12:23 remaining and the Nuggets leading 52-32.
Erica Turnbull scored 13 points and
Danielle Jones eight for Xavier, which
won for the eighth time in nine games and extended its home winning streak to 18
games, 16 this season.
Alissa Thompson had five steals.
Freshman Brittany Williams led 10th-seeded SUNO (7-20) with 15 points. Martynique
Hampton scored 13, and Disha Leonard had eight points, 13 rebounds and five steals.
Xavier pulled away in the second half by limiting the Lady Knights to 20-percent
shooting from the floor. SUNO shot 29.8 percent for the game. The Nuggets committed
five fewer turnovers and outrebounded SUNO 44-33.
It was the third time in Nuggets history that they limited a conference opponent to
less than 50 points three times in a season. SUNO averaged 45 points in three losses
against Xavier.
Xavier is 6-0 against SUNO in the GCAC Tournament and leads the series 53-7.
Third-seeded Mobile advanced with a 91-61 home victory over sixth-seeded Belhaven.
Fourth-seeded William Carey will visit top-seeded and defending champion Loyola in the
other Saturday semifinal.
