MEMPHIS, Tenn. —
Christina Warren had 14 points and a career-high 10 rebounds Thursday to lead NAIA No. 22 Xavier University of Louisiana to a 59-39 women's basketball victory over LeMoyne-Owen.
LeMoyne-Owen, an NCAA Division II member, counted the game as an exhibition, but NAIA member Xavier (3-0) counted it as a regular-season game. It was the Gold Nuggets' 24th victory in their last 25 games and their 11th straight on an opponent's floor.
Warren recorded her first double-double in two years at Xavier and has scored in double figures in every game this season.
Jazmoné Kelly and
Simone Johnson scored 12 points apiece for the Gold Nuggets, who shot a season-low 37.3 percent from the floor and committed a season-worst 27 turnovers. But Xavier countered those numbers with a season-best 50-25 rebound advantage and by limiting LeMoyne-Owen to 27.1 percent from the floor — the second time in three games an XU opponent shot less than 30 percent.
Xavier led 26-12 at halftime after limiting the Lady Magicians to 4-of-20 floor shooting. Since the start of the 2003-04 season, it's the fewest points Xavier has allowed on the road in a half.
Eight XU freshmen combined for a season-high 27 points and 19 rebounds. Another newcomer, junior center
Keldra Hall, grabbed eight rebounds. Johnson — a 6-foot-4 center and the tallest to play for
Bo Browder in his 12 seasons as XU head coach — had a season-best seven rebounds.
Ryan Herd led LeMoyne-Owen with 16 points and eight rebounds.
Xavier will stay on the road and play Lyon at 2 p.m. Saturday in Batesville, Ark. LeMoyne-Owen will open its regular season at 2 p.m. Saturday at city rival Christian Brothers.
