Charles-Alfred, Bashir defeat defending champion, reach national final

ROME, Ga. — Xavier University of Louisiana's Angela Charles-Alfred and Lailaa Bashir dropped their first four games Friday, then rallied for a 7-6 (7-4), 6-2 victory against defending champion Nadine Geschke and Sarah Urbanek of San Diego Christian in the women's NAIA doubles semifinals of the ITA Cup tennis championships.
Charles-Alfred and Bashir, the No. 1 seed, will play second-seeded Maria Genovese and Madeline Bosnjak of Georgia Gwinnett for the championship Saturday. It will be a rematch of the ITA NAIA South Regional final, which Charles-Alfred and Bashir won 6-4, 6-4 Sept. 22 at XULA.
"We know when we're down," said Bashir, a freshman, "but it's never a situation where either of us are nervous or uneasy about the score. We both know what we're capable of. It was just a matter of us executing that and doing it consistently."
Charles-Alfred, a junior, and Bashir are 9-0 as a doubles team this semester. Saturday they'll play for their third championship title.
"It helps a lot that our playing styles are very similar, but in a way we're still polar opposites," Bashir said. "I think it makes for a tough combination against opponents."
Geschke and Urbanek were seeded fourth.
