Freshman Wilson sets pace for Gold Rush at NAIA nationals

     VANCOUVER, Wash. — Freshman Ahmad Wilson was the fastest finisher Friday for Xavier University of Louisiana at the NAIA Men's Cross Country National Championships.
     Wilson ran 8,000 meters in 33 minutes, 8.9 seconds and placed 326th out of 335 runners.
     Also finishing for XULA were Jordan Ashmore (327th in 33:17.7), Ghassan Alansi (328th in 33:25.5), Devin Macklin-Jackson (330th in 34:00.0), Langston Scott (331st in 34:14.4) and Adrian Thornton (334th in 35:07.1).
     The XULA men scored 1,257 points. Oklahoma City scored 110 points to repeat as team champion, this time by 61 points over Taylor and 77 over Lewis-Clark State. Oklahoma City senior Mark Shaw was individual champion in 24:39.5 and won by 3 1/2 seconds.
     Oklahoma City has won five national team titles, all in the last seven seasons.
     This was the 17th Gold Rush appearance at NAIA nationals. Nine of those appearances were the result of automatic team qualification in conference or regional meets.
     Wilson was honored Thursday as XULA's NAIA Champions of Character recipient. "Ahmad is dedicated to this program," XULA head coach Yhann Plummer said. "He works hard every day. He is a great example for his peers."
     Plummer's Gold Rush will resume competition in early March during the outdoor track and field season.
