NEW ORLEANS —
Angela Charles-Alfred tied a Xavier University of Louisiana women's record Thursday when she was named Intercollegiate Tennis Association All-America for the third time.
     Also making All-America was XULA's
Lailaa Bashir.
Charles-Alfred is a junior from Saint-Pierre, Martinique. Bashir is a freshman from Jackson, Miss., and a graduate of Jackson Academy.
The ITA designates as All-America the top 20 singles players and top 10 doubles teams in its end-of-season individual national rankings. Charles-Alfred was ranked 10th and Bashir 12th in singles. Charles-Alfred and Bashir were No. 1 in doubles and produced XULA's first-ever end-of-season No. 1 ranking, women or men. Charles-Alfred and Bashir won the ITA Cup small-college national title in October.
     Charles-Alfred joined
Charlene Goreau and Kourtney Howell on the Nuggets' list of three-time ITA All-Americans. Bashir is the Nuggets' seventh freshman in eight seasons to earn the honor.
It's the sixth time in eight seasons that the Gold Nuggets produced multiple ITA All-Americans. Thirteen XULA women have earned a collective 23 ITA All-America honors, all in the last 12 seasons.
The Gold Nuggets finished the COVID-19-shortened season 10-1 and ranked third in the NAIA coaches poll.
