COLLEGE PARK, Ga. — For the third time
in its last six attempts, Xavier University of Louisiana men's tennis is the team
champion of the HBCU National Championships.
The Gold Rush, a longtime NAIA power, scored 18 points to win the
title against a field that included four NCAA Division I teams. Alcorn State was
the runner-up with 15 points, and Jackson State was third with 11 1/2.
Tournament organizers ended the event
because of rain Saturday evening and more rain in the forecast for Sunday.
XULA's accomplishments included:

Santiago Perez and
Shaikh Abdullah
winning the A-doubles title with a 6-3 decision against Alcorn's David Pata and Luka Andonov.
• Producing both finalists in
B-doubles. Fourth-seeded
Jacobi Bain and
Juan Ramirez will play teammates
Guillermo Coiras and Dedric
Ray for that title on a future date at XULA Tennis Center, said Coach
Alan Green.
• Perez reached the A-singles final,
and Bain reached the C-singles final. Neither championship match was completed.
XULA also won the HBCU men's title in 2015 and 2016.
The tournament was not played in 2020 because of the coronavirus pandemic.
For the first time in XULA history, the Gold Rush and
the Gold Nuggets won HBCU team titles in the same season. XULA outscored Jackson State
20-17 to capture the women's title.
