ALEXANDRIA, La. — Xavier University of Louisiana women's basketball was 13-0 in the regular season when allowing less than 60 points — 5-0 when allowing less than 50.
The Gold Nuggets were even stingier Friday in the quarterfinals of the Red River Athletic Conference Tournament, producing a season best for scoring defense in a 49-37 victory against Our Lady of the Lake.
XULA, 19-10 and seeded fifth in the tournament, will play top-seeded Texas A&M-Texarkana — an 84-55 winner against Jarvis Christian — at 7:30 p.m. CST Saturday. That semifinal winner will play Louisiana Christian or LSU-Shreveport for the championship at 4:30 p.m. Sunday.
"I've told our players all season that they won't go very far if they don't make the commitment to guard people," 24th-year XULA head coach Bo Browder said. "Look at our scores. Look at how we've won. There's the evidence."
XULA closed the first half with a 9-0 run to take a 24-18 lead at halftime. The Gold Nuggets scored the first five points of the second half, and the fourth-seeded Saints (15-13) never threatened thereafter.
Abryhia Irons, with 15 points, was XULA's only double-figure scorer. Teammate Nia Bishop had nine points, seven rebounds and four assists. Ja'Kiylah Esco had game highs of eight rebounds and three blocked shots.
Tiffany Lopez scored 15 points for OLLU.
XULA allowing 37 points resulted in:
        •  Its fewest points allowed in a game since 26 at home against Carver on Oct. 29, 2021.
        •  Its fewest points allowed on the road since 22 against American-Puerto Rico on Dec. 17, 2013.
        •  Its fewest points allowed in a conference tournament game since 37 at home against William Carey on Feb. 28, 2007, in the Gulf Coast Athletic quarterfinals at The Barn.
        •  OLLU's fewest points in a game since 36 at SAGU on Jan. 27, 2010.
